Leading Spas of Canada’s Board of Directors draws from spa professionals across Canada

Chair: Kathryn Gallagher

Kathryn, a full-time Professor at Seneca College, Toronto, Ontario brings 30 years of experience both from the business operations and service/sales side of the spa industry, along with the technical, practical side of spa services delivery. She previously served as a boutique hotel spa manager, and as a spa consultant, which included planning and opening several spas, both domestic and international. Kathryn was also part of a team that opened Canada’s first Aveda training Institute in Victoria, British Columbia.

She holds an MBA from the University of Guelph’s College of Business and Economics, CIDESCO certification, and an Esthetician diploma from Sheridan College.  She wrote a research paper reporting on the current practice standards and policies for estheticians that concerns ethics, regulation and policy, which was published in the Routledge Handbook of Health Tourism in 2017.

Co-Vice Chair: Alethea Austin

Owner and director of Achieve Wellness Spa’s two locations in Fort McMurray, AB., Alethea has an extensive background in both business and management. She has over 7 years University education with degrees in Psychology and Medical Rehabilitation.

High quality, multi-disciplinary care is a model Alethea is passionate about. Achieve Wellness Spa is a Quality Assured medical day spa with the Leading Spas of Canada and Alethea oversees over 50 health and wellness specialists at her spa that was awarded Top 25 Spas in Canada.

She is a dedicated mother, wife and community member. She is the Vice Chair for the board of Directors of the Spa Industry Association of Canada as well as an active board member of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Subdivision and Appeals Board (SDAB), the Alberta Provincial Community and Social Services Panel as well as the Chair for the Parent Advisory Committee for her children’s school and an Ambassador for the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce. Alethea is an active community member and is always helping out many local charities and sports teams. She understands the connections between mind, body, and spirit and is here to help make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Julie Simcox

Co-Vice Chair: Julie Simcox

Julie is Spa Director, Spa at Langdon Hall. After graduating from Laurentian University in Sudbury, On, Julie found her true passion in the field of esthetics and went on to graduate from Marvel in Toronto in 1997.  With quite a few years in the industry working as an esthetician, she went on to teach esthetics in both Toronto and then in Solihull, England.  She settled back in southern Ontario in 2008 where she has been the Spa Director at Langdon Hall since.

Treasurer: Amanda O'Shea

Amanda started out her career as a CIDESCO trained Esthetician in Ireland. After delivering treatments at sea onboard a luxury cruise line, she developed an interest in travel and learning more about the business side of the spa industry. Her international experience in luxury operations over the next few years saw her head back to sea, managing the spa on the world’s largest privately owned  Mega Yacht. From organizing Spa experiences in exotic locations such as the Maldives, to polar dips in Antarctica, no two days were the same. Amanda was then invited to open Canada’s first St Regis Hotel and Spa in Toronto, leading a team from pre opening stages to overseeing a full spa rebranding and renovation. After many years in operations Amanda was approached to join Book4time as their Senior customer success manager overseeing accounts such Disney, Langham, Hilton, Hyatt and One Spa World to name a few. She is currently enjoying having some work life balance with her family, and is excited to help grow and support the Canadian Spa industry through her work with Leading Spas of Canada.

Past Chair: Elena Zinchenko

Spa Director Ten Spa at Fort Garry Hotel and Business Director The Face Bar, Winnipeg, Elena was born in the former Soviet Union, Elena grew up and studied in Kiev, Ukraine. A graduate of the State University of Kiev, she graduated with MD of Hydro Geological Science.

Elena immigrated to Canada and in 2004, Elena joined the Ten Spa team at the Fort Garry Hotel, where she developed an extensive and unique result-oriented menu of services which are all signature to Ten Spa.  When Ten Spa opened in 2006, Elena became Spa Director.  Ten Spa was a pioneer participant in the Quality Assurance Program piloted in 2009 and won the Leading Spas of Canada Award for Quality Assurance in 2012.

Elena has a CIDESCO International Diploma of Cosmetology from St.Paul Technical College of Minnesota, and has also received an Oncology Esthetics Certification through the Clinical Oncology Esthetics Course developed and taught by Morag Currin.

Director: Katherine Asmono

With over 25 years devoted to the skin care industry, people development, and business management, Katherine co-founded and launched the award-winning Canadian brand Eltraderm Skin Care with the vision of revolutionizing the skin care industry and taking the Eltraderm Brand beyond industry standards by delivering on product performance and optimizing professional treatments to achieve the best results. 

Director: Liz Belford

Liz is Owner / Founder of the Rosewater Spa, in Oakville, ON.  

Since 2001, her passion and commitment has been focused on making the Rosewater Spa of Oakville a world class spa experience. To achieve this, Liz has criss-crossed North America exploring design concepts, interviewing owners about their business practices, mentors in the day spa business, investigating trends and products in the industry. She has cleverly blended her insight in hospitality, wellness and attention to detail to bring a truly unique level of the spa experience to her clientele in Oakville.

Director: Susan Browne

Susan has been invested in the Canadian Spa industry for more than 15 years as publisher of Spa Inc. magazine and creator of the annual Canadian Spa and Wellness Awards.  All under the umbrella of the company she founded, Dovetail Communications.  For over 30 years Dovetail has provided business solutions for organizations with services ranging from contract publishing, advertising, sales, marketing, communication, design, and content creation.  Working in a diverse range of industries that include retail, engineering, RVing, education, and of course the spa and wellness industry.

Personal growth and life-long learning has always been paramount for Susan who earned her Masters Degree in 2007 from York University while running her business.  With a firm belief in a work life balance, Susan promotes health and wellness to her primarily female staff and extended family.

Susan is pleased to further her work with Leading Spas of Canada and give back to the industry by taking on a new role on the Board of Directors.

Director: Marion Le Gall

Marion Le Gall is the Director of Spa at Guerlain Spa at Hotel X Toronto.

As a tenacious leader, Marion has cultivated and grown Guerlain Spa from the ground up to be what it is today – an award winning, Lakefront Boutique Spa. 

Her extensive professional background as the Director of Spa and Wellness for Palaces in France and London, Urban spas in New Zealand, and luxury cruise ships sailing around the globe solidified her proven, extensive knowledge in all things Spa from an International perspective. She further obtained a Master’s in Business in 2019 to exemplify her commitment to building businesses and to perfect her communication skills, proving her passion and dedication to her role. 

Marion enjoys travelling the world, spending quality time on a hike with her golden retriever fur-baby and ticking experiences off her never-ending bucket list!
