Spa Etiquette

Following are some tips to help you get the most enjoyable experience while avoiding possible awkwardness. Learn or brush up on what you should expect and what is expected of you. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call or email us right away.

Show up on time:  Your appointment time has been set aside especially for you, so please be there on time or even a few minutes early. If you arrive late, your experience may be altered or your service adjusted to fit the available time, in consideration of the next client. Inquire when making the booking if there are pre-appointment amenities that you can take advantage of by arriving early. These may include hot tub, sauna, pool or lounge. They also help you relax and get in the mood.

Cancellation:  Inform yourself of the policies in effect for no shows or last minute cancellations, especially if you have left a credit card number to confirm your appointment. Most spas are happy to explain their policies, but make sure you understand fully what will occur. If you really need to reschedule, please give as much notice as possible to avoid incurring any fees.

Questionnaire completion: Spa practitioners have spent years in training to provide services to their clients that will not cause them harm. They will ask you to complete a private questionnaire that assists the spa to ensure that any services you will receive will not negatively or dangerously impact existing health conditions, medication or other circumstances, known only to you. These questionnaires are confidential and for your specific benefit, so please complete candidly and honestly.

Courtesy and Respect:  Always turn off your cell phone or other electronics and leave them off while in the spa. This courtesy results in no electronic interruption or distraction for you as well as others. Quiet conversation is acceptable in most areas of the spa unless otherwise indicated.

Nudity:  If you prefer to remain partially clothed during a massage, underwear is acceptable, and many spas will provide disposable undergarments for your use. Therapists will usually leave the room while you disrobe, and are well experienced in guarding your modesty with skillful draping techniques during your service.

Male or Female Therapist:  Often your preference will be determined when you book your service. Bear in mind that at certain peak times or for a particular, specialty treatment, your choice of therapist may be very limited. If gender is a concern, be sure to clearly state your preference and act accordingly.

Speak Up:  Although your service provider is equipped with a number of useful and practical skills, mind reading is not one of them. You can improve your experience by simply giving a few minutes thought to your service in advance so you can inform your therapist. If having a massage, think about any areas of the body that need special attention; any stiffness or aches and pains. Think about how you would like to feel, as massages can be tonic, rejuvenating or relaxing. Last, always let your therapist you prefer your treatment in silence, feel too hot or cold or if anything is causing pain or discomfort even if it’s right in the middle of the massage as this can lead to further pain and dissatisfaction with your experience.

Children: Please do not assume that your child will be welcome at all spas. Most spas cater to adults only. There are definitely child friendly spas who offer special spa services to children of various ages or who provide onsite childcare during your service. Always ask if there is any doubt.

Tipping:  A 15 to 20 percent is tip is customary. The reception desk may have gratuity envelopes and pass them along to the therapist. Some spas may permit cash tips only, which is generally the preference of staff. If you received service from more than one therapist, common practice is a separate tip for each one. At a medical spa, tip the therapist, not the medical doctor. Always best to check if a gratuity is already included in the price.

Product recommendations:  Please bear in mind that your therapist is a nurturing, trained professional, with your welfare in mind. Through questions and experience, he or she will inform themselves about you and any areas of concerns and will then identify any additional areas that may require attention. Any recommendations for additional services or home care are intended to help you maintain or improve upon the results you see after your treatment, until your next appointment.
