Generation Why? Blending the Generations

We are all familiar with generation gaps and the issues that they can bring about. But where do you begin to manage three different generations working within one team, while addressing their entirely separate and often conflicting needs?

Generation Y is just beginning to impact the workplace, in a profound way. Finding a balance between providing a work environment that accesses the genius of Generation X and Y, yet doesn’t alienate the current team who enjoy the existing work environment, poses a challenge for managers today. The one-size fits-all approach to management may have worked for the baby boomer generation who understood structure, hierarchy, corporate loyalty and respect for those in senior positions. Those days, however, are long gone.

A shift from function-based work, to project-centered work, will be the motivating factor for the workers of tomorrow. The first “Gen Y” wave has begun to graduate from college and university and enter the working world. It won’t be long before they’ll start calling for employers to develop new ways to attract, retain and support this new breed of employees.
You won’t want to miss this discussion as we dive into these age-group related topics, and help you blend the generations.
