Stressed? Time to Relax and Spa-ahhhhh….

We’ve all heard it – stress kills. I found it tragic, yet interesting, when the recent passing of four zebras at the Greater Vancouver Zoo was attributed to stress. Apparently the animals were forced to share their enclosure with cape buffalo - and though the two species co-exist in the wild, maintaining them together in an enclosed space created significant stress for the zebra. Two months later, the zebras were dead.

During these challenging economic times, stress levels are heightened due to increased workload, job insecurity and financial concerns. And stress has an economic impact in the workplace as well, with the loss of productivity, absenteeism, turnover and increased medical costing business $300 billion a year, states the American Psychological Association. According to the World Health Organization, by 2020, the top five diseases will all have the underlying contributing factor of stress.

So how do you manage your stress? Perhaps a visit to the spa is in order!

Research from the International Spa Association states 60% of Canadian spa-goers primary reason to visit a spa is to relax, and relieve or reduce stress. Spas are recognized as a haven for relaxation – an oasis of calm in a hectic life. And there is research to support spa visits for stress relief; people who go for a single deep-tissue massage reduce their blood pressure by seven points. Over time, lowered blood pressure can add six years to your life. (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine).

While massage is the spa treatment most likely to be tried by first time Canadian spa-goers, there exists a plethora of additional relaxing spa treatments to explore. “For me, a pedicure is perfect when I’m stressed out”, notes Alison McIlvride, a spa regular. “I like to arrive early to enjoy the steam room and sauna, before relaxing in the pedicure chair with a magazine”.

“Whatever your preferred treatment, I encourage all guests to maximize every spa experience by taking advantage of any amenities available”, advises Wanda Love, CEO, Leading Spas of Canada. “Enjoy the steam room, sauna, mineral pool or whatever is available. Even an extra half an hour enjoying a cup of tea in the soothing atmosphere of the spa lounge allows a brief time-out to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul”.

In addition to stress reduction, more Canadians are recognizing the true value of regular spa visits and embracing the spa lifestyle. 30% of Canadian spa-goers note spa treatments are part of their commitment to overall health and wellness, as indicated by the ISPA research.

So invest in your own well-being with a trip to the spa and consider a ‘stay-cation’ this summer. Explore our beautiful nation and experience the vast array of delights the Canadian spa industry has to offer.
